Quick survey for couples ~ When you go on a car journey, who does most of the driving?

Where ever we go we share the driving on a time basis rather than mileage. If we are on a motorway then we travel faster and cover more miles. My wife prefers the motorway. When we drive in France and Switzerland and Germany etc we still share the driving. While one drives the other map reads and yes she is very good at both. By sharing we can cover a lot of miles with less stress.

Well, we're about to do a tour around the UK. My fiance's going to do all the driving, mainly because we're in a hire car and because I'm under 24, it would cost like £100 more to put me on the driver list. But otherwise, we'd probably share.
Reply:I do. I get motion sickness sometimes if I don't drive. Also, we always take my car b/c it's only a few years old--his isn't in the best condition. And I think I'm the better driver (but I don't tell him that!) :)
Reply:I like to be the one who drives, I have a better sense of direction and I am able to make a decision faster.

I found a pair of winter gloves and a pair of mittens -- it was 96 today.

I also found an abundance of rocks, but unlike Futility Knife, this didn't puzzle me in the least. As a matter of fact, there was one that I thought I might keep for my own. (Rocks, it's kind of a genetic obsession.)

By the way, when I was staying at a hotel in CA ten years ago, I was watching the news. There was a story about British police cracking down on cell phone use while driving. There was a police car on a British freeway following a motorist who was talking on a cell phone.An electronic message appeared on the top of the patrol car saying please turn off your phone. The motorist complied, and then the sign said thank you. American cops need to crack down on it here, as cell phone use and driving are a dangerous mix.

It's reliable.

I was driving from visiting my mom... I was in Texarkana at the time... A police officer pulled me over.

He ordered me out of the car so I did as ordered my friend stayed inside. They questioned me then questioned him to see if our stories matched (they did).

Then they asked if they could search my car. I said, "yes" so we could go on our way. They took out the seats and emptied our suit cases on the ground and found nothing. Then just left everything how it was and left.

We put everything back in order then drove off. 10 minutes later we got pulled over again! For the exact same thing. Same thing as before was demanded of us.

I said, "OMFG 2 of your guys just searched us 10 minutes ago". He said, "well I didn't". I shut up real quick.

What would you have done?

I wouldn't have consented to the search. If they had probable cause they wouldn't be asking.

You heard wrong, either there is probable cause or there isn't. A warrant won't be issued unless there is (in theory, at least, that's what courts are for after the fact if the power is abused).

Another time, Hitch-hiking to work.6AM Had my hard hat

on and my tool-belt over my shoulder. Was stopped and roughed-up, cuffed, brought back to the County Jail.

Never told what I was accused of, had to get my parents come down and identify me. When I finally found-out why? I fit a description tall, lanky, long blonde-hair, headed east. Asked them about my days wages their reply, none they just laughed!!

Now if that won't leave ya with an attitude!
Reply:I got pulled over once and, with no explanation, asked if they could "look in" my vehicle. Of course, I didn't have a problem with it....my son (age 14) was with me. They did much the same thing - pulled up the folding seats (it was an Isuzu Trooper), lifted up carpet, for goodness sake, and proceeded to PRY the front of the dash off!!!! Yeah, they left my vehicle a big mess, didn't bother to clean it up. The last thing they did was to pour out the coffee creamer I had just bought - it was still sealed.

I went into the station the following day to file a complaint, and the Sargeant said they had probable cause - because I had bought the vehicle from a guy who was, at the time of the search, incarcerated for selling marijuana.

There's sometimes a funny aspect to things - after we got home and got our purchases inside, my son said, "Whew! glad they didn't check the toilet paper!" I had bought a package of 12 rolls, and the dumb kid had stuck a pipe inside the tube of one of the rolls - it had dropped to the bottom of the package!!!!!!! I would have killed him, but I was afraid I'd get pulled over for a random search when I went to dispose of the body. lol
Reply:if i had time i would have said no both times.... especially if i they didnt have good reason to pull me over in the first place.... my mother works for an attorny that prosecutes cops often, so the next step would be to take the case to them.... i also babysit for a procecuter... im planning on practicing law in the future, id do whatever i could to perserve my own rights

Also, are you aware that any electric vehicle (especially ebikes and electric scooters) can be easily charged from any electric outlet? Example: We have a 150' extension cord that we plug in everywhere, in schools, friends' homes, parks, and while shopping. This "opportunity charging" extends the practical range of our electric pickup truck to almost double, without having to lug around heavy batteries.

I would never buy an electric car. It is ironic about electric cars considering to prevent "global warming" we should cut down on both carbon and wasting electricity and if everyone owned electric cars imagine how much electricity would be used to charge these junk cars. Not to mention the factories they are made in and all the "dangerous pollutants" that come from those.
Reply:I recently bought an electric bike, but I couldn't afford $10,000 for an electric car with just a 25 mile range. I would buy a similar car to the upcoming ZAP-X Crossover which will have a model that can go 100 miles/charge and over 100 mph for $30,000, as that could serve as a primary car.

If I had the money I'd consider a 25 mile/charge electric car for $10,000 as a secondary car for short shopping trips and such (Sacramento, CA), but I'm already making payments on a Prius that have me tapped out.
Reply:I wouldn't buy a used electrical car since the battery, which is the most expensive part of the car, has a limited life time. It can be replaced but I would go straight to buying a new one.

So there would be no way to charge it. But yes, I would absolutely buy one if I lived in a house or a rental property with a garage where I could plug it in. I think electric cars are a great idea. And ethanol is a great idea as well.
Reply:25 miles!!! That would mean you could never go more than 12 miles from home!!! Use a bicycle, its cheaper and healthier for you.

Even for communting I need to get over 50 miles per day, so a maximum of 25 miles is really impractical. I would prefer to get 250 miles per charge. Then again I would prefer that the batteries wouldn't cause a landfill problem either. Most exotic batteries are an environmental nightmare.

I think we are still about 10-20 years away from a practical electric car and we would still need some major technical hurdles to overcome.

I'd far sooner add a $5000 bike to my collection, as I can do far more than 25 miles myself and would love to invest in a far nicer bike than the ones that I currently have. I can appreciate the idea of an electric car, but a 25 mile maximum range is going to be a turnoff to probably greater than half the people that might be interested. Heck, my commute is 35 miles roundtrip.

I've locked myself out of my car more times than I can count. One time, and I have no idea why I did this, I locked the door and as I was shutting it I just threw my keys on the drivers seat. No clue what I was thinking there.
Reply:I did that a few weeks ago. It's always kinda embarassing...but it's alright if there's somewhere to wait. I got locked out of my car at the mall so I had a lot to do while I waited to have my extra set of keys brought to me. :)

is there a 10 yr. grandfather clause. it is doing property damage to my driveway, i have a handicap child so we plan to put a cement driveway but i need his car port moved. all the rain water drains at least 1 foot over on my property. code compliance says civil court matter. is there a clause on how long the car port has been there. it is in very poor shape, fell once barely standing now. we are in texas. i have pictures and video of the rain and the damage. do i have a case

If he built on your property, then you have the right to have it removed. Your property is your property and a 10 year grandfather clause, if there is one, would not apply. Your property deed and city/county property and tax records will provide proof of ownership.

If he belly aches about it, then ask your neighbor for a copy of car port's building permit and proof he owns the property.
Reply:You had better act now. The longer you allow him to remain on your land the stronger his position becomes. In fact, if he goes to court first, the court could award him the land under an "adverse possession" claim.

If he doesn't, rent a bulldozer and move it yourself onto his property. Then the ball is in HIS court and he'll have to decide if he wants to sue you.

Check local law for statute of limitation, IF an ungranted use of your property gives rights (easement) to the trespasser after a given length of time.
Reply:How long you owned the property is irrelevent. The important question is how long is how long the car port has been there.

Assuming there is a 10 year statute of limitation for tresspass to land (it vary state by state, I have no idea what it is in TX) and the carport has been there for more than 10 years your neighbor now owns that land throught adverse possession.

You might have a case, contact an atty in Texas.

Do not rent a bulldozer and do it yourself.

This is a survey for my pyschological class, thanks for your opionion!

I have 2 children so I need my car and would spend whatever gas costs to do what I need to do.

My car is paid off, pretty good on gas and I don't want a new bill so I wouldn't buy another car just for more gas mileage.

Public transportation doesn't exist where I live unless I walk for 3 miles to the stop and that can't happen, never mind trying to lug 12-15 bags of groceries home on a bus with a 3 yr old, it just doesn't make since.

Sacrifice other activities? I do so little extra trying to live responsibly that I don't have much to give up.

I recycle and do what I can so my final answer is that I would pay for gas no matter how much it cost because it is just like a roof over my head, a necessity.
Reply:I would pay just about the max we pay now $3/gallon, but I would also stop driving to random places on weekends, up the coast for "some air", and would start shopping or running errands all at once instead of here and there.

I live in LA where there is a somewhat decent public transportation system.

-To get to my job 3 miles away I would have to take 3 buses and it would take about an hour due to the route schedule.

- I could ride a bike, but frankly I'm scared I'd get run over

- Based on my work schedule I would have a hard time finding a carpool buddy, but it would not be impossible

-I could walk but don't want to because I'm lazy, I admit it, plus I work the afternoon/evening shift and would have to walk home in the dark or catch the buses in the dark.

If I worked somewhere whee they had a carpool program or reimbursed for public transportation and a bus stop outside I'd do it, but right now all the driving I can afford to save is the recreational driving, not get to work commuting.

Reply:The price of gasoline in the US has already soared beyond what I would be "willing" to pay for it. However, from all signs, it will eventually rise higher. A more efficient car might be the way to go; however, if it means getting a very small car, then the chances of dying or being seriously injuried in an auto accident also rise. Public transportation in many cities is out of the question, due to poor planning on the part of the cities providing it. It is also not always reliable, and the stations are often frequented by those of dubious nature. One must also consider family matters when using public transportation or carpooling. It is not always possible to respond quickly should an emergency arise and one needs to reach home. If it is imparative to have a vehicle, and a necessity to drive it to work or elsewhere, then budget constraints appear to be the most logical option.

Some people hate even the smallest dent in their car, others do not care too much, again others might feel it gives the car character, uniqueness or may even look cute. What are your thoughts, how do you feel about it ?

At first I felt upset but it is small and not really noticeable so if anyone mentions it I tell them it is that my car didn't want to look like everyone elses so it has it's own character now. It has a dimple.
Reply:I used to have a 96 Honda Accord. My dad dented its side five years before I even got my permit and never fixed it. The dent was not huge but it was not tiny. He later gave me the car. With the dent.

I hated having a dented car that I did not dent. The concept just annoyed me. But, because it was a common car and color, I could easily find it in parking lots. When I moved I was holding a box and used the dent to help hold it up while I opened the door. And the dent made my car unique. It had character =)

Two weeks ago I got a BEAUTIFUL and new Honda civic. If someone so much as touches it they will suffer.

Reply:I drive a 5 year old Ford F250 Crew Cab 4x4. This is the BIG boy. It's like parking a battleship.

I've got a nice scrape on the left most front bumper. It's been there about 4 years. I think my kids put it there, but who knows.

I've got a dent which I actually saw happen: a friend of mine backed into my parked truck with her mini-van.

I've got a few other nicks and scrapes and scars here and there.

I used to obsess over things like this, I used to completely freak out. NOW, especially since I have no car payments for the first time in 23 years, it's not such a big deal. IN fact, I am reluctant to buy anything new, as I don't want to go ballistic every time some little thing happens to the paint.

Reply:I got an old pos. 91 white honda accord. It has 2 and a half hubacaps, but no one hubcap is completely gone. The rust on the car is crazy, you really can't tell the car is white. The speedometer doesn't work. I can tell how fast I am going by looking at the RPMs because I drive a manual. There is no passenger side rear view mirror. No radio, it has been stolen too many times I'm not putting another one in. The windshield is broken pretty bad. Everyonce in a while, the clutch slips and the car stalls. If I lived in LA, my car would be on PIMP My Ride. Oh well, I will still be driving this car for a while, I have too many student loans.

What do you think about hydrogen cars?
My major dislike is the fact that this country has no infrastructure for it they are mostly a pipe dream and it is being touted as "right around the corner" right along with Flying Cars!

Hydrogen tech is much more available than the resources to put it into practice.

There are far more realistic alternatives that will work with current infrastructures. However they cut into oil co profits and that is why they are not moving forward any faster than they are.

The cars themselves are fine(or will be someday)

The truth is I haven't found one yet that's true to their word . There's got to be one that really will pay and not ripp you off ! You can make a little cash--usually $1-5 per survey, occassionally a little more. I usually make about $20 per month. Not enough for a car...

I've listed most of the sites I have taken surveys through and actually been paid (or received other rewards like gift cards or CD'S) on the following webpage:

Aggregated info information that is grouped together so it can't be connected with anyones personal identification like name, e-mail, phone or address. That's what survey sites SHOULD collect. Avoid sites that say they give, rent, or sell any personal information (info that is not aggregated) to third parties (unless you really don't mind getting junk mail, telemarketing calls, and spam).

Also, never sign up for a survey through an unsolicited e-mail--since these might not even be from the site they claim to be, but could be a phishing scheme to get your information and mis-use it. And never give your credit card info--there is no good reason a legitimate free site would need it.

Reply:I have participated in many on line surveys. From my experience, the ones that I complete pay in small amounts- $5 or sometimes $20. You would also have to fit the demographics in the survey. I often start to fill out a survey only to be told I don't fit the group.

So, go ahead and sign up. You may not rake in the cash, though.

I do surveys through SurveySpot.com, NPDOR, %26amp; IPOS (I think it's IPOS). Some of these surveys now give you "points" that you can use to enter lotteries for prizes and cash. You will not get paid to fill out the surveys. Read them before you agree to fill them out.

Land Survey questions: would like to know ballpark cost for boundary survey...?

What is the ballpark cost for a boundary survey? I am getting one in the next couple weeks. How do I know if I am getting a good surveyor? What do I look for? Will a boundary survey resolve issues with neighbors that claim parts of my yard are their property? Is there anything that can be done about a neighbor putting their trash (old tires, old bathtub, 2 junk cars, tractor, etc) practically in my backyard? He claims it is his land but its past the tree boundaries and into my yard. He also claims the addition on my home is 2 inches from his property line. The other neighbor claims my driveway is on her property as well as the wooden swing. The addition, driveway and swing were put there by the previous owners. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Land Survey questions: would like to know ballpark cost for boundary survey...?
Boundary surveys vary greatly in price, but you can expect to pay at least $1500 for one (probably more if you live more than 25 miles from a surveyor's office). An ALTA survey would be valid for as long as you owned the property. Almost all survey companies do these types of surveys, and nearly all are fairly identical in quality...Ten different survey companies will have the same location of the property line (or within fractions of a milimieter). There are some firms which specialize in doing exactly this sort of thing, you might feel more comfortable using one of them. But nearly all survey firms will do this, and they will nearly all be the same.

Two points to consider.... #1. : Just because there is a treeline, that does not necessarily mean that is the property line. Treelines/hedges/etc... do not delineate property lines. They are often very close to the actual lines, but not always. A surveyor can settle once and for all exactly where your land ends and your neighbor's begins (and it will be upheld in court).

#2. : I am not sure what state you live in, but most states have building codes which require all building walls to be at least half a foot from the property line. If any state were different, I would think the distance would be GREATER. That tells me that your nrighbor is probably mistaken about the actual location of the property lines (and perhaps you both are?) Be prepared either way.

Unfortunatley, the only way you can really be sure is hire a surveyor. Encroachment (thats the terms surveyors use when someone else's house or driveway is partially sitting on someone else's property) can be a nasty thing. Even if you are proven right, you would probably have to go to court to have anything done about it. Good luck!
Reply:For a 50 X 120 flat lot and a FEMA elevation certificate I am being charged $2,500. This is located in a small rural town in Washington. This was the cheap bid since the surveying company is also doing work for the city at the same time. The competition wanted $5,000 for the same work. I personally know the surveyors dong the work and the company they work for is an established local company. Like anything, get references - talk to some of their previous customers and ask around. The survey may not completely resolve your issues since it sounds like you have some very difficult neighbors. What it will do is help you if when you have to take them to court to settle your property dispute.

how would you know if he's good- if he's liscenced, he should be capable of doing it correctly. you can ask your friends,"who's a good surveyor?"

putting trash near your property-- some towns have laws against this type of thing. if you are not in city limits, probably nothing you can do, legally. only recourse is tell him it is an eyesore and ask him to move it.

when surveyor marks the lines. neighbors have to abide by them. if they disagree with it, then they have to hire a surveyor and pay him to do it. with today's GPS, the 2 surveys should be within millimeters of each other. if 2 surveyors come up with diffwerent lines, you have to go to court to establish line.

an alternative--ask the neighbors if they will go in with you, hire a surveyor, split cost, everybody agrees to live with what he marks. this would split the costs, show good will, hopefully keep peace.

property disputes can get ugly.
Reply:I would get references from locals in your area. Perhaps there are references and ratings online for surveyors in your area. I live in Las Vegas. The last time I had to hire a surveyor, when I bought my first piece of property, I had to use smoke signals.

Regarding the trash, you'll have to check your county or city ordinances to find out if any laws are being violated. More than likely, there are. In the case of abandoned vehicles, the last registered owner of the vehicles should be responsible.

Building easement ordinances vary from state to state, county to county. This is probably why you need a surveyor. If these building infringements were on the property when you bought it, you'll want to check your purchase contract for any "purchased as is" clauses. Someone might have just wanted to sell the property just to get out from under that.

Laws in your state might give you certain rights. I don't even know where you live. I haven't checked your profile. I would consult with a real estate attorney.

i don't know if the question made any sense. i'm really not a car person at all. what i'm trying to find out is what your favorite car would be, something like a porsche, vanquish, volvo. Child #1 26 year old male, works full-time, doesnt go to school, makes 2,500.00 a month. This child does not pay rent, bills, food or anything else for that matter. He works his 40 hours and that's about it. He spends his free time watching tv, on the computer, or out with his friends on the weekend. Since it is the New Year, i think i need to say something because i dont think he is planning on leaving anytime soon. Dont get me wrong i am not comp[laining but i think it is time for him to help out with room, board, and around the house. How much do you think is a fair amt to ask? he has no bills, no car payment, no credit cards, no student loans nothing. Myu husband and i work hard while our adult kids sit back and watch us. I dont want to throw them out, but i dont want to start another year like this. This is a tough call. My son is 19, and like you, I can visualize him still here at 26 or 36 haha.. and I love my kids dearly, but as parents, we want our kids to become productive beings in society and be able to function on their own. I never believed in room and board for my kids, but that was before he graduated from highschool. The economy is so bad that even though I know my son would like to get a place of his own, he just will not be able to afford it alone. But your son is older, and makes more money. I would not be able to do the room and board thing, but I can certainly say 'you got 1/4 of the utility bills, and grocery bills". My son, even though only working at mcdonalds, does contribute to household bills as needed. My daughter on the other hand, is a senior in highschool, and I have been a single mom for some years now, working many hours a week, and even though I give her money all the time, she cleans the house.. a lot.. so she earns her keep haha so to speak. This has probably not been much help, but I do know that about 8 months ago, my son was here, not working, having his friends over all the time, and I kicked him out of the house. That lasted about 3 days.. He called me and said "mom? can I come home? I will get a job and do what I am supposed to do". I think that maybe you need to do the same with your son. I have pissed off both of my kids in the last year.. but.. we do have to sometimes give them a push to make them get their life together. We as parents are unconditional love anyways, will always be there for them, but we at least need to make them try.. it is not healthy for them to never leave home...and we need to teach them responsiblity for themselves, whether they want it or not... in your case.. charge the rent or they have to move on. The threat of that might even make your daughter make a few changes.. See, we as parents also I think (thanks to society and the csb crap) are afraid today to do and say what is necessary, forget all that and just go back to the old days.. it is working for me.. :)
Reply:Ouch!! hurts just reading it. I was out on my own at 18, working full time and school, so its hard to sympathize with these kids. They have it too good to leave, I wouldn't leave either. First of all, your daughter can work, she can and she will if you cut off the dough. Tell your son that if he wants to stay that he needs to pay a good amount for rent and food. You might tell him that you are collecting an amount to put away for his 1st house but are taking what you need for expenses. I'm guessing you and your spouse will want to retire some day, do you see that happening if this continues? Making them fend for themselves will help them, it will help them grow up and mature.

He helps pay utilities and cell phone bills and will buy groceries or dinner or lunch on occasion. I also have a 26 year old daughter who is in school part time and looking for a job. So she cannot contribute to the household expenses much less pay her own bills. So we all help her out when needed.

Child 1 does need to contribute by helping with the food bill, utilities and cleaning his own room. $300 to $400 a month would be a good place to start, depending on your cost of living.

You are raising two "freeloaders" that have absolutely no responsibilities; therefore do not have to function as maturing adults. It is time that you and your husband prepared them to be on their own by making them accept some of the responsibilities around your house.

Child one: I think the fair amount of rent should be how much you pay in bills to live there plus a little extra for repairs (same as any management place). But I would really push to move them out.

Recently a family member with high type 2, gave up eating meat and reduced their insulin intake, and now are in a very good healthy place.

Survey? - if you have disease like diabetes, would you rather a or b?
I always try to fix health issues through healthy habits if possible. I've lowered my cholesterol from 300 to 200 in 7 months by switching to a vegetarian (now vegan) diet. My goal is to have it at 150-170 at the end of 12 months.
Reply:i gave up meat to be healthier. if you live in a big meat family it might be harder though. that's all my grandparents eat because that's all they're used to eating. i'm glad they're doing better now that they're off a high fat diet to a point where they were able to reduce their insulin intake.

Reply:Contrary to most popular opinion BEEF does NOT have large amounts of fat in the muscle tissue. What fat is in the muscle is marbling and is of the omega 3 and 6 variety!!!

There are about 5 whole cuts of beef that are not "low fat"!!

I would never give up eating beef or lamb!!

I do not have comfortable wealth, a 401k, nice cars, designer clothes, and very little jewelry. Stocks are there and loose me $$$ frequently. I have an antique mud hut (adobe over 100 yrs old) that won't be very clean ever!!!

I have given up potatoes, rices, pastas, cereals, grains of all kinds, peas, dried beans, carrots, and corn!!

That is easier on my glucose levels. My blood pressure is 115/50 my lipids panel is better than good, and I am getting the amounts of insulin down to a managable level.

small new diesal that runs on low sulfer is best in total terms of amount of raw materials consumed over the life of the carand in manufacturing it and operating it-and considering the acutal production e nergy required as well as the disposal enviromental issues of batteries and such of a hybrid -they in the long run are far more damaging to the enviroment than a diesal is- and the added costs will likely never be earned back over the life of hybrid unless you drive it 150k.

Reply:An argument as old as the hybrid technology. I owned a 2002 Prius and let the math solve the issue for me. The car was $6000 more than the Echo sedan platform that it was built on. That means in the expected five year life of the car I would need to have a $1250 a year savings in gasoline just to make it pay for itself. When the car was new and the batteries in top condition the car got an average of 48 MPG on my daily commute. An Echo would have gotten about 40. The Insurance cost more for the Prius, the services cost more for the Prius, and the cost of replacing the batteries at 80K was always in the equation. It turned out that it was way cooler to drive a Prius than en Echo, but certainly not as inexpensive. After having some major problems with it I traded mine for a small Mercedes and have lived happily ever after

It would be good if cars were made to last with replaceable parts. You are pulling out of the parking lot in a shopping centre or movie theatre and you accidently bump another parked car, you get out survey the scene and notice you've left a visible dent impressed upon the other car....do you write a note explaining the occurence and leave your phone number...or do you drive off before someone notices your dilemma?

Personally, and I'm very cynical but I'd leave a note stating "You can thank me now, or later, for leaving your sad vehicle with a little more character."

How honest are you in this situation?
I would be VERY tempted to just leave it and go away, but i know that i will feel guilty and won't be able to rest, so i will contact the owners,Afterall, why should they have a bad day just because you've had an unlucky one?

So, I walked in to the restaurant and found the manager. He then made an announcement, and the couple came over. It all worked out in the end for us.

If someone left a ding just to the body, Oh well...BUt if it effects the performance of the truck, then we will have issues...I have had some pretty bad ones, one about a month after getting my truck...This was a hit and run in the parkin lot at a restraunt...I was so annoyed for so long, and eventually realized that there was no real damage except for the cosmetic portion of the truck(really bad scratch, scrape, and paint removal...) But it was more of the "How could someone do that and just leave?" I have a really bad concience, and have to leave a note, or even wait for the owner... First step

Go to www.carwale.com and see which car works for you in terms of major concerns - price, size, mileage, etc (you can do a comparison of up to 4 cars)

Next test drive all the cars you have shorlisted on ONE single day. Preferably choose the exact same route for all cars (you can ask the showrooms to send you the cars for trial). I would recommend that you try it at the showrooms if you want to try more than one car at each showroom (different models and versions), and especially if the showrooms are close to each other.

I strongly recommend that you start with the one you think is likely to be the best drive and then move to the one you consider the worst.

I am trying to save up for a new car (my truck has too many problems) so I can find a job out of town. My goal is to come up with $1,500. I am going to sell my truck for about 500 to 700 bucks so how can I come up with an extra couple hundred? I live in moreno valley California and finding a job is hard which is why I want to commute for a job because I have friends in other cities who get jobs fast while they are in school and i have already graduated! I will eve take online surveys if they are ligitement and worth my while. Any ideas to solve my paradox? Sounds to me like you need a, "live in" job for starters. You could work and live on site for 6 months and save all your earnings. Your lodging and food would be included so you could really save up.

Jobs like this might be at a summer camp or special needs facility. There are people who need companions. You could work as a live in nanny.....I'm assuming here that you are an upstanding citizen with an adventurous spirit!
Reply:Taking online surveys for extra cash is feasable, but unfortunately it is very difficult to predict exactly how much income you will earn. You can definitly make money taking online surveys, but unfortunately it will likely only supplement your income and not make you the type of money you are looking for.

That doesn't mean that you shouldn't go ahead and register with the online teen survey companies out there, to get a better idea as to how much money you will be able to make.

Register with websites that at a miminum list a privacy policy on their website so that you can see how the companies you are registering with use your personal information. This way you will be more assured that the companies you are registering with are legitimate and will indeed pay you.

Pros: Better fuel economy(sometimes better than hybrids, no real sacrifice in performance, can be fit to "normal" looking cars, MPG benefits at highway speeds unlike hybrids which are beneficial only at slow speeds.

Im doing this debate thing... So I need you opinion (I'm surveying people). Should teens only be allowed to get their drivers license and drive a car after they graduate from high school?

I love this idea!!!!! What a great incentive to get an education.
Reply:No. I mean, you have to work and study to pass the test and get your license, so what correlation does that have with graduating?

Besides, you also have to take into account that said teen will be driving their parent's car, unless they are able to buy and insure their own. Should you need to graduate to prove you're able to buy and insure your own car?

It sounds like some one is trying to legislate the lack of responsibility of the parents (by providing an irresponsible kid with the car) by making graduation a requirement.
Reply:maybe make a progressive license program, such as only to and from work and school from 16-18 and then full privileges at 18.

the truth of the matter is that teens, as a group, cause more accidents than anybody else on the road period. Frankly, i'd like to see the age bumped up to 21 or 25 (and no i'm not an old fogey). How about vehicle restrictions, such as no sports-cars, SUVS or 8-cylinder vehicles until age 18 or 21?

Also, other countries show that by lowering the drinking age and increasing the driving age they successfully reduce drunken driving overall.

High School students need a car so they can do extracurriculars, which is very important for getting into college and for resumes for scholarships and such. Also if they have a job to earn money to put themselves through college. This would work opposite of what you want because without a car they could not do these things and then their higher education would be affected.

Also there is already the law in place (at least where I am from) that if you drop out of school your license will be taken away, so that in itself is the incentive you are looking for to graduate.
Reply:That is not a great incentive to get an education for the simple fact it won't work on the majority who decide or are forced to not finish school. They are many factors that play into not finishing high school other than just being lazy.

Also, now a days teens have alot of repsonsibility and many are main providers for their family. I am a emplyed teen and I have to many responsiblities to be worrying about not having a license because some square parents thought it SOUNDED like a good idea.
Reply:No... ,any teens have jobs to help support their families. Also, no parent wants to drive their kids to all those sporting events and after school activities. I do think ateen driver should have only one other person in the car. Nationwide, 16 year olds with several people in the car have more accidents.

I run a garage that also does valeting for customers. The worst culprits for dirty car insides are always the horsey people. Why do they not take more care. I am not complaining because it brings in good revenue, thank you very much. Just wondering?

Anyway, Stables aren't the cleanest places on earth if you hadn't noticed. There is mud and crap and welll, other things to step in. Not that that is really an excuse though.

On my farm, I always have an extra set of shoes in my trunk so I can change them and not dirty my interior. I'll take the dirty shoes and put them in a bag and they stay in the truck so they don't get my trunk dirty too.

Its not that everyone who is "horsey" does it, but I do... My car is too nice to have all that nasty stuff inside it. (its a Mustang to keep with the "horsey" theme). I know some people with some down-right nasty cars from the stables, but I'm not one of them...

I’m a first time buyer so need a bit of advice – I’ve had the home buyers survey back and it indicates a few things doing, nothing serious a few roof slates need relaying, a guttering down pipe on the car port and some tiles loose in bathroom.

It also says that the gas and electricity should be inspected prior to exchange.

Who is it that I need to contact to get this shorted – solicitor or estate agents, and who is responsible for the costs?

Reply:You are in a good position first time buyer in a buyers market get the agent to contact the owner and have the repairs done prior to completion and exchange and you could ask for a report on the electric and gas safety and condition at the same time if it is an old house.

If they want to sell they will be happy yo do these things as you represent a good option to sell their property.

The alternative is a reduction in the price equivalent to the cost of the repairs.
Reply:Make it a condition in your offer so that these items must be fixed to your or your agents satisfaction before the purchase can be completed.Thus, the seller will pay.
Reply:You need to contact the Estate Agents and your Solicitor.. The Estate Agents will need to gain access and may know somebody to recommend to you. As for costs i'm afraid its down to you, or maybe some sort of arragnement with allowence on completion of 50/50. 75/25 with the Vendors. Make some suggestions see what works out best.

I would try to get the vendor to do it however, when I sold my last house there were a couple of things that came up on the survey but I, the vendor, wasn't prepared to pay to get the jobs done. By doing this I was at risk of losing the sale but I knew that if the buyer didn't back down from urging me to get the jobs done i would have given in so as to get the sale. I was confident though that the buyer really wanted my house so I kind of called his bluff really, a bit mean but needs must and all that. In the end the buyer dropped it and said that he would pay for the repairs. Now that you are the buyer I would stand your ground and see how far you can push it to ensure that the vendor gets the jobs sorted before you agree to purchase the house or reduce the price of the house accordingly. If the vendor plays the same game though as I was playing you'll have to be brave as you may lose your chance of buying your dream home if he/she won't back down but then he/she risks losing the sale. i think in this game it's the bravest that wins. In any case your agent will advise you and remember that they are working for you so don't give in too easily.

My car is worth 4000.00 trade in value. I owe 9,000 but I have gap insurance which would pay the car off. The insurance company is going to pay $5000.00 to fix the car but they won't just total it because of some "Market survey Guidlines" they are required to use. Is this true? Is there anything I can do?

trade in value is not what they use the use fari market value if the fair market value is higher than the cost to fix it they will go with the cheaper alternative and you gap ins is offerd by your bank it is not a factor in your ins co desision
Reply:A vehicle is only totaled by an insurance company when the repairs are higher then the care value. Trade in value is only waht a dealer will pay u. that is why full coverage is only worth having if your car has value to it. Full coverage on a car valued at a 1000 dollars is a waste, but one valued at 5000 can be useful. Higher yet can be important.

Should all girls cut their fringes short, or grow it and tie it back? I read in the paper 'women drivers with long fringes may be at greater risk of accidents a survey found. Almost half of women with eye-skimming celebrity style haircuts admitted never tying their hair back-which could prevent hair falling in their face' so they cant see where they are going! Eight percent feared they would ruin their hairstyle thee survey by a car insurance company found. What about guys with floppy fringes?

I think you'll find it's just women drivers....I don't think the hair matters..
Reply:Well I have quite a long front fringe, that sometimes does go in my eyes. Whilst I am driving I prefer to clip it back.

If you don't use a really tight grip, your fringe will go back to normal once you've taken the grip out.

I think car insurance companies should worry more about people talking on their mobile phones STILL and driving at ridiculous speeds.

I am a driving instructor and on several occassions had to ask a pupil to fasten their fringe away from their eyes......it does make a big difference to their sight and perception of the road ahead and around the vehicle. Asked more females than males but some of the styles for men are as bad with the long fringes nowadays.....they tend to wear a hat rather than fasten it back!!!

Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of 'Free' Health Care

Every new 'right' the U.S. government has promised has turned into a massively expensive failure, yet the media continue to cheer supporters of tax-funded programs.

Americans are obsessed with rights. We always have been.

But the concept of rights our forefathers laid out in the Declaration of Independence has changed dramatically. Those rights – life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness – were acknowledged to come from the Almighty, given equally to all people. Today’s rights come from Almighty Government.

Health care is the newest “right.” From presidential candidates’ universal plans to the return of HillaryCare to Michael Moore’s movie “Sicko,” it’s all over the media.

Calling it a “right” is an emotional argument advanced by those who want others to pay for their health care. They bring out the children and ask whether anyone can deny them the “basic human right” of health care – but don’t bother with the evidence showing how health care in this country would be harmed by government control.

A look at other modern “rights” might give us a clue about how well a new system would work. These rights started out as privileges, among them education and a paid retirement.

Now education is not only considered a right, it’s a mandate. How well has it worked? American students attend school at least until their teen years, but 15-year-olds ranked 24th out of 29 countries in aptitude for “real-life math problems,” according to The Washington Post. Literacy surveys suggest one in five American adults is functionally illiterate. And taxpayers keep shelling out money to fund the system.

Americans also cherish the right to retire – but we expect to be supported in our old age. Younger workers and employers are forced to support retirees, funding another right.

And how well has that worked? The poorly designed, outdated Social Security system is disintegrating rapidly as the number of retirees balloons. But once you’ve established a right, it’s difficult to take it away. The government, which promises such rights, must go to its sugar daddy – taxpayers – to keep the rights coming.

We’re already well on our way toward the health care right/mandate. Want to be more like Canada? It’s not that far off. Cato’s Michael Cannon has pointed out that third parties in America pay 86 cents of every dollar of our health care – about the same as Canada’s socialized system.

What we – or rather, those third parties – pay for health care is already determined by the government as well. Emory University medical professor Robert Swerlick has noted that “the pricing of medical care in this country is either directly or indirectly dictated by Medicare.” This market meddling even causes doctor shortages, he says, in needed areas of specialty.

Prescription drugs are already considered a right, thanks to political moves like the Medicare drug benefit and massive media support. A Business %26amp; Media Institute study found broadcast journalists treating prescription drugs as though they grew on trees. Overall, the coverage supported the idea that medications should magically be available to everyone at far lower costs.

Of course, the magic behind new “rights” is your money.

Cannon and fellow Cato expert Michael Tanner explained problems with tax-funded care in their book “Healthy Competition: What’s Holding Back Health Care and How to Free It.” If health care is guaranteed to everyone, how much does everyone get? Who decides who receives what, and how would the care be administered? What happens if everyone wants the most expensive treatment available?

“With the wide variety of medical tests and treatments that consumers may claim as their right, someone at some point must decide where the right to health care ends, lest the nation be bankrupted,” they wrote.

We’re well on our way toward that as well. Our “rights” to Social Security and Medicare devour about 40 percent of the federal budget. State and local property tax revenue, which normally funds education, mushroomed about 35 percent between 2000 and 2005, according to the Tax Foundation. We can’t afford any more “rights” like that.

But the left says tax-funded care is right for the children. Meanwhile, what becomes of them? They’re growing up in an America where the “rights” mentality is deeply ingrained, and the media continue to feed them with it.

When the children come of age, perhaps they’ll want the right to a job. They won’t remember that France already tested that idea for us, and it led to high unemployment and rioting. Perhaps they’ll guarantee Disney vacations for all families and force childless Americans to pay for it. “The pursuit of” will conveniently fade away as they look to government to guarantee happiness.

They will know less and less of a true right – liberty – and have no idea where it comes from.

What is funny in this entire discussion is the socialists who want government control of health care will tell you that other countries do it so should we. No one in this country is without health care, anything to the contrary is just a LIE. The paper states, "The power of interest groups opposed to any serious reform effort (e.g. the insurance industry and the pharmaceutical industry), dims the prospects for serious health care reform in the United States any time in the near future."

Sure, you can get the help you need to handle depression, anxiety or even something as common as hay fever. But should you ever need to buy an individual health policy, you're likely to find that insurers consider you high-risk or even untouchable. You're likely to pay more for a life or disability policy as well, and perhaps be denied a security clearance.

In her study, Pollitz found that roughly 90% of applicants in what's known as less-than-perfect health were unable to buy individual policies at standard rates, while 37% were rejected outright.

A 2005 Harvard survey found that most Americans have the symptoms for one or more mental health disorders at some time in their life, but most cases are mild. The findings:

* Anxiety disorders, experienced by nearly 29% of Americans during their lifetime, are the most-prevalent class of mental illness.

* Mood disorders are experienced by 20.8% of Americans.

* Impulse-control disorders are experienced by 24.8% of Americans.

* Substance disorders are seen in 14.6% of Americans.

Only 41% of patients with disorders lasting 12 months sought treatment, the study found.

The overhead cost of an insurance claim from a company is 12%. The overhead cost of medicare is 3%. I keep hearing lets give the money back to the people and let them decide what to do. If you are concerned about innocent life, what about people who have done nothing wrong dying from disease? If you are so concerned with happiness what about the people going bankrupt because they can't afford a surgery that there provider wouldn't cover? (Medical costs are the highest cause of bankruptcy in the U.S.)

As for the guy below me, one trip to the ER can be up to $10k. If you don't have the money to go to the doctor you don't have the money to go to the ER. Besides, all they have to do is stabilize you. Once it is no longer life threatening they do not have to give anymore treatment and often times won't (they risk bankrupting there hospital if they give everyone treatment).

Why does this matter? Well, this means our businesses, which must provide for the nation's health care, cannot compete as effectively as nations where the collective, rather than individual businesses pay for health care. So, it's just good business sense for America to have it.

Second, in America, businesses, including insurers, must by law maximize profits. This is a very poor model for health care.

Since the countries of the northern europe have very high taxes, very high standards of living, very high satisfaction in their lifestyle, and far superior health and educational attainment than America does, your analysis is... bogus.
