Germans- Volkswagon diesels run forever and get up to 50 MPG.

you can't compare them, for they are fullfilling completely different demands. american cars are usually, larger, heavier and better equipped, so they can't compete in economy with the other two categories. European and Asian cars are closer to each other, for the they belong to the same market segment. In gas mileage, diesels are hard to beat, when this is the only aspect of the comparison. Asian cars however, have a better reliability, for Asian automobile manufacturers have no preconceptions on design issues, so they don't have 'landmarks', they make the most rational design decisions for the sake of 100% fulfilling custom/traditional expectations.
Reply:Honda (Japan), KIA/Hyundai (Korea), and SMART (British) get pretty good fuel mileage, in general, but it still varies from model to model.
